There is invariably something to laugh or cry about and a lot to think about in these short stories, which include

"A Bush League Hero"
"The Kitchen Side of the Door"
"One of the Old Girls"
"Maymeys from Cuba"
"The Leading Lady"
"That Home Town Feeling"
"The Homely Heroine"
"Sun Dried"
"Where the Car Turns at Eighteenth"

Buttered Side Down (Audible Audio Edition) Edna Ferber Flo Gibson LLC Audio Book Contractors Books

In the words of the 1912 Book Review Digest, this consists of "A dozen stories of breadwinners, women chiefly, whose bread invariably falls with the buttered side down." There's humor here, and now-fascinating descriptions of the details of everyday life of the time. But all is not sweetness and light. Some of the stories seem to end abruptly, leaving me wondering what the point was. Others end in infuriating ways; there aren't a lot of happy endings here. In fact, the last story is absolutely dark. The theme seems to be, as one of Ferber's characters says, "Most of us are where we are because we belong there, and if we didn't, we wouldn't be." A much different outlook on life than we have now, where there's such an emphasis on improving oneself, and upward mobility.

Despite my seeming complaints about these stories, I will be reading more Edna Ferber because, although infuriating, the characters, descriptions and stories are just plain interesting.

Now to the nitty-gritty. I read the free Kindle version, ASIN B002RKSYNG, that shows a publication date of March 17, 2006. There is an active Table of Contents and the formatting for the most parts seems fine to me. There are a typo or two, but no worse than the current books I've bought so far. I don't see any reason to pay for this one unless the The Works: Edna Ferber gets good reviews; then it might be worth spending the money for convenience sake. (No reviews for that collection yet, as of this writing.)

Buttered Side Down (Audible Audio Edition) Edna Ferber Flo Gibson LLC Audio Book Contractors Books Reviews

edna ferber is one of my favorite authors, so I like pretty much anything she has written.
I collected these Edna Ferber stories on my for future reading...
fun book
I just happen to be a fan of this author. It's always enjoyable to read smaller works from iconic writers of major pieces. The development of the talent and the growth of the person becomes evident. No one wrote better than Ferber, in my estimation.
Who were we once? We were these people in these stories. The time frame of these stories are of a time no one teaches about in school. The little everyday stories that women and men read in the magazines of their time show us what was important then...and much of it still is important now.
Edba Ferber was ahead of her time; she reflects the moral values that made America great, in all of her writings that I have been able to read; you will not be disappointed; she describes morally gifted, strong women that love men and know how to support them in life's struggles.
Wow! What wonderful writing. I can't believe I haven't read Edna Ferber's work before now, and I will definitely be hunting for more of it. These stories are old, but fresh as dew in their execution and it is a joy to find this quality of work to savor.
